Our Mission

The Magic City Acceptance Project (MCAP) is a volunteer network of individuals, agencies and organization focused on professional practice and community support that results in positive outcomes and a positive future for self-identified, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning youth, adults and families in Birmingham, Alabama and surrounding communities.

MCAPs philosophy is based on the work of Dr. Caitlin Ryan and the Family Acceptance Project and reflects the belief that families love their children and want the best for them. It is also based on recognition of the strength and resilience of  self-identified LGBTQ youth in our community.  MCAP believes that change will be driven by their commitment to a welcoming and affirming community for all.

A REALLY COOL QUOTATION

Our Values

  • We recognize that our community includes children, youth and adults who self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning (LGBTQ) who are integral to our families, our community, our circle of friends and our civic life.

  • We believe that family, in its diverse forms, is the most important source of support for most people and that everyone deserves an affirming family.

  • We believe that youth in our community are valuable. Investing in their well-being, education and opportunities is vital for creating a better future for us all. All youth deserve to feel a sense of belonging and safety.

  • We believe that all members of our community have the right to quality services and supports consistent with the highest standards of professional practice and ethics.

  • We trust that our community continues to grow in its commitment to human rights, honoring diversity, and individual freedom.

  • We work toward inclusion, seeking common ground and shared goals in our community.
